What is Paint Correction

Paint is memory.
It records everything.

Every automatic car wash, every improper wipe-down, every parking lot door swing leaves a record in your clear coat. Paint correction removes that record — permanently — through precision machine polishing that levels the surface at a microscopic level.

This is surface restoration. It requires a trained eye, a controlled environment, and the patience to work one panel at a time until the paint reads exactly the way it left the factory.

Correction Stages

Not every car needs the same work.
Every car gets the right work.

01

Single Stage Enhancement

A single polishing pass using a light cutting compound followed by a finishing polish. Removes light swirls, minor water spots, and surface haze. Restores clarity and depth on paint in generally good condition.

Ideal for: newer vehicles with light defects
02

Two-Stage Correction

A cutting stage followed by a finishing stage. Removes moderate to heavy swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation, and water etch marks. The most common correction level for vehicles with significant accumulated wear.

Ideal for: vehicles with years of daily use
03

Multi-Stage Restoration

A comprehensive panel-by-panel restoration using multiple compound and polish combinations. Addresses deep scratches, severe oxidation, heavy swirl damage, and paint neglected for years.

Ideal for: acquisitions, pre-sale prep, neglected paint

The Process

Every correction follows the same discipline.

1

Paint Thickness Measurement

Before any machine touches the car, we measure clear coat depth across every panel with a digital paint depth gauge. This tells us exactly how much material we have to work with — and sets the boundary for what is achievable without risk.

2

Decontamination Wash

A thorough two-bucket wash, clay bar treatment, and iron decontamination removes all surface-bonded contaminants. Polishing over contamination ruins both the polish and the paint. This step is non-negotiable.

3

Panel-by-Panel Correction

Working under controlled lighting, each panel is polished independently — selecting the appropriate machine, pad, and compound combination based on defect level and paint hardness.

4

Inspection and Refinement

Every panel is inspected under high-intensity lighting at multiple angles before moving on. If a defect remains, we address it. There is no “close enough” standard at Puro Detail.

5

Protection Application

Freshly corrected paint is vulnerable. We complete every correction with a protection layer — whether carnauba wax, paint sealant, or as the foundation for a ceramic coating installation.

A note on expectations

Paint correction is subtraction — we remove a microscopic layer of clear coat to eliminate defects. Defects that reach into the base coat cannot be corrected through polishing.

During your consultation, we assess your paint honestly, show you what is achievable, and recommend only the level of correction your vehicle actually needs. We will never oversell.

We will also tell you if the paint is too thin to safely correct. That conversation is free. Damaging your paint is not something we are willing to do.

What We Remove

Common paint defects, corrected.

Swirl Marks

Circular micro-scratches caused by improper washing, automatic car washes, and dry wiping. Appear as a spider-web pattern under direct light. The most common paint defect we see.

Water Spots

Mineral deposits left when water evaporates on a hot surface. Type I sits on the surface. Type II etches into the clear coat and requires correction to fully remove.

Buffer Trails

Holograms and swirls left by improper machine polishing. Often found on vehicles “detailed” by shops without proper training. A correction we see regularly on pre-owned acquisitions.

Oxidation

UV degradation of the clear coat presenting as dullness or fading. Common on vehicles stored outdoors. Multi-stage correction can restore significant gloss depth and color vibrancy.

“Corrected paint is the only honest foundation for a ceramic coating.”

A ceramic coating applied over defected paint permanently seals those defects in place — locked beneath a 9H hardness layer that cannot be polished through without destroying the coating first.

If you are considering a ceramic coating, paint correction is not optional. It is the prerequisite. We correct the paint. We verify the surface. Then we coat it.
